Although schools started a week ago, today was officially my first day due to my recent return from Jordan. After arriving back, I registered at the school and was accepted yesterday. This marked the beginning of my journey in a new environment, one that I was both nervous and excited to explore.
The school day itself was enlightening. I was pleasantly surprised by the warm and friendly atmosphere among my classmates. Coming from diverse households and varying financial situations, they offered me a unique opportunity to observe and understand different walks of life. This experience gave me an invaluable insight into human interactions and societal dynamics—something I consider essential for anyone aiming to make a positive impact on the world. After all, how can a doctor treat a patient without first understanding the illness? Similarly, to drive meaningful change, one must first understand the roots of the challenges people face.
When I arrived, the main door was closed, so I waited until it was opened. I was then directed to my classroom by a kind assistant. Walking through the door, I felt a twinge of nervousness, as this was my first experience in a public school setting. Yet, it was different from what I had expected. The environment was relaxed, with students chatting and playing games. Although the first teacher was absent, the lively energy in the room was palpable.
What struck me most was the absence of judgment. Unlike my previous experiences in private school, where material possessions like phones or appearances could sometimes create divides, here, students seemed to focus more on enjoying each other's company. It was refreshing to see such inclusivity, where everyone was simply being themselves, free from the pressures of superficial comparisons.
As the day unfolded, I observed various behaviors and dynamics that reminded me of a study I once read. The study involved monkeys placed in a simulated classroom setting, interacting with both each other and a human "student." It examined how social environments influence behavior—how exposure to certain influences could lead to bullying or collaboration, and how individuals responded to differences within the group. Similarly, my observations in the classroom reaffirmed the importance of fostering a positive environment, where people can grow and learn from each other rather than succumbing to divisive behaviors.
I don’t claim to be above anyone or to know everything—far from it. In fact, this day taught me as much about humility as it did about observation. For example, when a classmate asked to borrow my water bottle, I initially declined, more out of surprise than anything else. This interaction made me reflect on how small misunderstandings can shape perceptions and how important it is to communicate with empathy and clarity.
This first day has set the stage for what I hope will be a transformative experience, not just academically but also personally. It reminded me that education is not confined to textbooks—it is also about learning from the people around us. My classmates, with their diverse perspectives, have already begun to teach me lessons I might not have learned elsewhere. I’m looking forward to embracing this new chapter and the growth it promises to bring.
